“Janus” is one of the oldest ancient Roman gods. He was the god of the ‘beginnings’ and the ‘transitions’, hence also of gates, doorways, bridges, endings and time. The concepts of January and janitor are both based on the aspects of Janus. He is usually appearing as a two-faced god (“Janus bifrons”), an image of 2 heads looking at opposite directions.
There are basic and interesting explanations regarding the interpretation of the image, fitting nicely with our practice’s overall image and philosophy:
- As a god of beginnings and motion (technical or physical) he looks after the passages, causes the starting of actions, presides on all beginnings and since movement and change are bivalent, he has a double nature, symbolized in his two headed image.
- Because of his initial nature he was frequently used to symbolize change and transitions such as the progression of past to future, of one condition to another, of one vision to another and of one universe to another. He was also known as the figure representing time because he could see into the past with one face and into the future with the other.
